A black-and-white negative is made through a photographic process, and the design is then chemically etched into thin brass. This process creates finer recesses that are hand filled with soft enamel. A clear epoxy dome is recommended for protection. An especially appropriate process for very large pins. Since there's no need to stamp a die into the metal, the production of a photo-etched pin is a less expensive process.
